Cellphone Porn? Anybody doing it? (Technical, no pics)

I've been doing iPod clips with moderate success for about a year now, and am thinking about doing short movies for cell phones. I know, it's not all that big in the USA, but in Europe and Japan downloading stuff on the cell is hip, and a lot of people do it.

I haven't really gotten into detail yet, but as it looks to me you need to have several sizes and formats for several types of phones, like Nokia is using different than Sony Ericsson, etc.

Is there a way of rendering only one size and format that fits a majority of phones, or do we have to have 10-15 different variations of one and the same movie? Anybody experienced with this, (sensible) comments are highly appreciated.

BTW, we do have all CS3 software, including Device Central.

I have quite a decent experience with cell phone distribution as we distribute in like 14 European countries, yet I am in Vegas and have to leave now, I will reply later on.

I ain't no mobile services provider / content aggregator so I will try to push what I registered from the content producers side.

Downloading stuff on the cell phones - sounds great / realization is tougher.

Let's put aside any ways HOW to get the clips to the end customers, the best way would of course would be to have a direct agreement with the mobile operator / carrier - but that's impossible to get, so I assume in your case it would be more or less like downloads from your own web properties for mobile.

Yes, as far as was confirmed to me, there really is a huge amount of different variations with different phones and it's really the know how of those so called content aggregators (those who take on producers / format the content for delivery and have distribution agreements with mobile operators / carriers) to make sure the video will be available for every handset.

The system should actually automatically recognize the model the end customer uses and come up with a suitable solution as far as I understand.

That's for what I know, never really studied the concrete solutions. From what I can confirm, if marketed excessively mobile downloads really can bring additional revenue, but according to own experience, not from internet where there is a full screen alternative though.

The only money were made in cooperation with content aggregators and direct mobile distribution within carriers so far.

I was actually thinking about making a separate section on an existing page with cellphone movies. In addition, I thought I could furnish existing provider sites, ringtone sites, etc. with small, free adult clips in cell format. I wouldn't make any money off of the free clips, but the provider site would, so why wouldn't they do it? My intention is to get cell-customers online to download more from my site. Not sure if this makes sense.

I'm just talking out my ass here, but can't you design pages in WAP format that portable devices like Blackberries and Palm's recognize and display in proper format? Couldn't you then embed the videos in those types of pages? Just guessing based on some quick reading a while back. So I could be way off.

Thanks for the offer, but I myself own a considerable amount of domains, more than I can use. Having the COME DEPOT domain has mainly historic reasons. In 2001 my European computer geek developed a site in bright orange for me, which looked exactly like the Home Depot site. After consulting with a US attorney we dropped the idea, but kept the name, since it is just one letter off from millions of male surfers who are looking for wheelbarrows and power tools. I still have dumbmasses putting in DeWalt>Comedepot into Google.

                                  Hey JennyS,

If you are going to supply content to a content aggregator, the one I work with wants pics in the format 1024 X 1024 pixels 300 dpi or mov clips in one of the following formats:

                                  720x576.mov (uncompressed)
                                  720x576.avi(uncompressed)
                                  720x576.avi (3ivxD4.451 codec)

The aggregators them supplys the content to most phones and most phone networks.
                                  I hope this helps

Mobile Mainstream (and Adult) Content is pretty huge in Europe

You don't get movies but ringtones, wallpapers, short clips, "answers" to stupid questions, phrases, etc, etc, etc

I for one would love to get more into this niche but given from what I've looked into the entry costs are enormous and the bureaucracy to cut deals with mobile phone carriers must be a fucking nightmare...

If you're going to do it yourself, that's pretty much how it goes... Design simple WAP / XHTML pages that have dynamic links to content on your server. Use the WURFL, http://wurfl.sourceforge.net, to look up the phone's user agent and match it as closely as possible to best format, width and height to the content you have to create those links. You can also integrate with companies like Bango to provide a billing solution via WAP (not SMS), where a user tries to get content but is sent through Bango and redirected back to the actual content download page after they've made a payment, for example.

My personal experience - all the effort and time put into it was not worth the return.

Sure does, but I don't get it. A 1024x1024 pic at 300 dpi is going to have at least 600KB, if heavily compressed/optimized for web. It will have around 1.0 to 1.4 MB as a normal JPG. What are they doing with these pics on a screen that can't display better than 72 dpi anyway, if even??

Same goes fro movies, a 720x576 uncompressed avi or even Quicktime is almost something you'd want for web-tv. The clip is going to be massive in size, even for our low-life DSL in the USA, not to mention for a cell connection that only gets a little better download speed than a 56k modem.

They want they best quality to use as masters...They edit to their needs

Thank alook at Jamster and Jamba and look at the phones and mobile networks they supply content for.

They are the largest aggregator on the net with more than 130 million downloads a month. Just bought but News Corp last year and are now combined with Fox Mobile.

I think they know what to do with the pics and vids and they are even starting to do hardcore content in Europe.

So, if you can supply quality content as what was mentioned in my post above, hit me up at [email protected] or per my sig and let's do a win win deal for both of us.

                                          BTW, they pay in euros

Use the WURFL, http://wurfl.sourceforge.net, to look up the phone's user agent and match it as closely as possible to best format, width and height to the content you have to create those links. You can also integrate with companies like Bango to provide a billing solution via WAP (not SMS), where a user tries to get content but is sent through Bango and redirected back to the actual content download page after they've made a payment, for example.

My personal experience - all the effort and time put into it was not worth the return.

Hank said they have 130 mio. downloads a month on just one page. At Euro 0.99 a pop that's around $ 180.000.000.- a month or 2 Billion $ a year. I probably wouldn't want to to start this in the US, for legal reasons, but getting some of the Euro-cake don't sound all too bad.

They're also an "aggregator". Carriers and aggregators tend to be the ones making the bank, since they have all the control. But yea, even a tiny slice of 2 billion a year would be nice.
