I am pretty sure they can operate just fine untill the corps status is revoked.
I know companies that have operated for years and not paid their state filing fee's.

there are several reasons why a company can forget to pay its SCC fee's. Example.. move/address change the information gets sent to the address on file as the registered agent... Not rocket science, banks still give loans to companies that forget to renew, people still do business and the goverment still takes your taxes.
