The forum - no surprise - is a spam heaven of doom, but I only invested a little time into it and to a random stranger it will look like it's alive and kicking

I know this is an oldish sorta post, but what was the reason for trying this? I presume you were aware that the content would end up being all spam...
I run a small support forum and also have a 'general chat' subforum - it's full of spam.

I delete the entire forum and re-add it occasionally just to clean up house, I also have a simple mod that will not hyperlink or display URLs in messages where the username has only posted once. Most of the spam posted gets no free backlinks or anchor text.
