I don't know about the others, but for me it is mostly luck and a bit of timing.
Hitting the submit button at just the right post number taking into account the number of posters currently posting in the thread and also taking in to account the number of posters who will try to snipe a win.
Also I have been playing these contest for just over 2 years
but mostly it is all luck.
