                                                          A reciprocal link from a similar themed page is smart search engine optimization. Add them slow and steady and you will get as much weight as you want.

                                                          Do a search on Reciprocal Links and Google.

                                                          You will find most people with a clue have a good mix of reciprocal links on their pages. Its natural for a page to see hits from a relevant site that its been linked too, and then to link back because the referring site is on par with its theme. Its good user experience and tells google you are sharing relevant info not only onpage, but offpage.

                                                          And to add about this site in question, its not running pure recips, not sure why that was noticed first and foremost.

                                                                                          Jays slowly fell down as more people became apt at gaming the engine. His site should still be top if you ask me, but its shy a few factors that are needed today, that i obviously wont comment on.

                                                                                          Iwannanewgirlfriend was interesting, im still unsure if the guy was a fucking idiot, or if it was corporate sabotage. But heres what happened according to a reverse engineering/outsiders views via the serps.

                                                                                          One day about 2 years ago i saw a Pr7 Site that was a full on duplication of iwannanewgirlfriend, code, ref codes, everything, complete copy. The 2 twin sites shared the serps for only about 1 week befor BOTH were removed from the index. (i wonder if i can find them checking now). As soon as i saw the duplicate site i thought it would be bad, an ancient domain with a pr7 is going to erase the original. And figured it was sabotage, the guy had to be smart enough to not think he could just duplicate his site and double his traffic.

                                                                                          I still see iwannanewgf at times, but apparently and obviously, the duplication of the site on a high page rank, trusted domain, pwnd him.
