    Need an alternative to personal web server!

    Would anyone out there know how I can obtain a personal web server to install? I have windows XP home edition.

    I've been working to understand ASP and am reading a book that requires me to instal a PWS on my computer. I hear XP Pro has this but I'm hoping there is an alternative someone may know about.

          PHP is by far the better, but if you want to work with ASP, I'd upgrade to xp Pro and then use the IIS that comes with it, then you're good to go. ASP will work better on the windows machine because its all part of the microsoft family but PHP is really better on a linux. If you do jump on to the php/mysql environment, get yourself a really cheap or used computer and put linux on it and turn it into a server for yourself (for testing and learning).

                      +1 for php and apache,
                      but if you have to use ASP, install IIS, but it sucks.

                          First off if you are wanting to develop for the internet and you need to use windows the you should *NOT* be using xp home edition.

                          As for an altenative to PWS on XP Home Ed. you can use IIS with the steps found at this link:

                          I would however suggest learning C# for .net instead of asp. Microsoft has a great online traning resource and a free version of Visual Web Developer 2005 available here:

                          Let me suggest learning www.coldfusion.com instead. Its much easier to code and much more fun
