It's actually a hormone thing. The body releases a certain hormone in the final month or so of pregnancy which tells all the ligaments holding joints together to relax. This is the final stage that is required to allow a rather large baby to pass through such a tiny area. Without it, no woman would be able to handle it.

Unfortunately, her body decided to release it very early. Chances are it's because this is our second baby and her body thought "hey, I already know what to do!" and just did it.

Besides it being extremely painful (a LOT of weight pushing down on an already stretched to the limit ligament), it was also very scary because for a prolonged period, the pelvis might not be the only ligament affected. She could potentially of lost use of her legs or arms or what have you, and fell. And with a pelvis in that condition, a fall could have been very disastrous.
