                i'm a redneck, and part of me finds this funny too watch. on the other hand, the reasonable side of me sees this as a completely fucking retard way of bruising up the animal you're about to eat. i personally wouldn't treat an animal i just killed in this way, simply because it's not good for the meat i'd intend on eating. that is, if they did indeed hunt the animal.

                if they just found it laying there, it just goes back to being funny again. right up there with that chick getting fucked on top of the dead bear...

                                Wow, I missed another intense discussion.

                                I didn't even watch the video, just read your individual analysis of it.

                                I am not black. I am Native American, though I prefer plain old "American".

                                I live in the South also, where we capitalize it. Not sure why. I have a great many white, Cuban, black, and Mexican friends, not to mention other nationalities.

                                The "New South" is a strange place. I know off hand, probably 25 black men and women who openly call themselves rednecks. And many more whites. And Cubans, and Mexicans. I don't think redneck (at least in this area) is regarded as a derogatory statement at all. It is a title worn with pride and, even, earned. There are local events that are named such enticing titles as the "Redneck Games", the "Redneck Derby" (auto demolition contest), "Redneck Mud Championships" and many more.

                                I myself don't qualify to be considered a redneck. I wasn't born here, which seems to be a requirement. There is also a very unique dialect that has sprung up, a combination of Mexican influence mixed with southern slang, leftover phrases from the slavery era, and imports from much of Latin America. All of those things, combined with the easy-going "farm-speak" of descendants of poor white farmers and helpers is this interesting dialect.

                                For the most part, at least in my area, these folks consist of all classes of people, all races, all backgrounds. To my knowledge there has not been a racially motivated incident in the last 15 years among this group. Most often, if there IS such an occurrence, it happens among "outsiders" who are either recent transplants or not even connected to the local "redneck" scene.

                                These folks barbecue together, go to school together, go to church together, without debate over the merits of skin color or background. It is the new American Melting pot and all seem to be welcome, mostly.

                                Just my 2 cents, but I think someone way overanalyzed that video.

                                Of course, it is undoubtedly different elsewhere.

                                                                        A popular etymology is that the term redneck was originally used by African Americans as a pejorative for white people in general, in the same manner that peckerwood and ofay were coined by blacks.

                                                                        that being said, as a whitey who grew up in the south with redneck neighbors, i prefer the term cracker.

But in this day and age I think it's pretty safe to say southern whites have taken the word back and made it their own. Therefore redneck no longer carries any power as a racial slur. it's no more of a racial slur as terms hillbilly and hick.

                                                                                    Are they used disparagingly? Yes, by people of all colors.. even white. Do I think they rise to the level of racial slurs? Absolutely not.

                                                                                                                Southern born does not a redneck make..

                                                                                                                The term comes from the men working in the fields in the mountains all day resulting in their necks becoming red from the Sun... The term was used in negative ways as their visits to town were seldom... and when they did get there, they would usually get trashed and cause lots of problems.. so they were labeled with the term which is now used in many instances to describe anyone from the south.. which is simply a stereotype.. not a racial term or label...
