Clustered Web Hosting, also known as a Web farm, is the process of combining 2 or more servers in to one system in order to handle high volumes of traffic.

If a Web system has tens of thousands of visitors a day then a cluster will be used. As requests come in they are evenly distributed between servers in the farm. These vary widely in features and descriptions and are extremely expensive. Most Website owners will never generate enough traffic to warrant a clustered solution.

Clusters are more reliable than a single dedicated since you now have a Web server to back-up a Web server. If one server goes down then the other servers in the farm can handle the requests.
