Also of note, drinking an excessive amount of liquids has the equally bad effect of stripping your body of electrolytes. Your heart needs potassium to beat. This is how "water poisoning" occurs - you drink too much water and your heart stops.
Not to mention the negative effects on your kidneys.
A normal person shouldn't really consume more than 2 litres of fluids in a day. Add fluid as your activity level increases (about 1 litre for every hour of strenuous activity).
So, if someone is drinking 3 litres of water, plus coffee, soda, tea, water in vegetables etc etc for maybe 4 - 5 litres of daily fluid consumption with no strenuous (ie sweat producing) activity.. you are in danger of causing more hard than good.
