    Cruise Ship With 1,300 Aboard Disappears???

    Yo, I just heard on the radio that a cruise ship with 1,300 people on board on the Red Sea just disappeared??

    There just ain't ONE radar installation along the Red Sea, there's like umpteen of them.

    Can't find a print story yet but radio said the story just broke.

Doesn't make sense because those 1,300 passengers probably all had cell phones and if anything happened it would be all over the world by now. Gonna wait til the bottom of the hour to tune into the news again.

                                              Been a rash of ships sinking and pirates and shit in the news though. Didn't know the seas were so busy. Makes sense with all the people sailing nowadays.

                                                      Believe you me, as a lifetime news man I have all the wire stuff but no word yet. Normally I would brush it off as bogus since nothing's on the wires BUT with today's cell phone technology, stories get sent faster than the wires can capture and confirm. That's why I'm hoping someone here heard of it on their radio stations or some other source. Too early to tell but it was a bulletin on our local station here in LA. I should have more info in a few minutes.

                                                          Yep! Salaam 98 the cruise ship is missing. Lifeboats are now being seen by Egyptian authorities. Story came from Egyptian Maritime. Passengers believed to be primarily muslims returning from pilgrimage to Mecca.

                                                                                          Lifeboats carrying people have been spotted near where the ship, the "Salaam 98," was last seen, maritime officials said.

                                                                                          Saudi and Egyptian naval vessels and helicopters were searching for the ship, which disappeared from radar screens shortly after sailing from the port of Dubah, western Saudi Arabia, at 7 p.m. local time on Thursday night, the maritime officials in Suez said.

                                                                                          They spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to address the media.

                                                                                          The ship was to have arrived at Egypt's southern port of Safaga at 3 a.m. local time, the officials added.

                                                                                          "We lost all contact with the ship shortly after it left the Saudi port," said one maritime official at Suez. Its last position on the radar screens was 62 miles from Dubah.

                                                                                          An Egyptian helicopter spotted a lifeboat carrying three people, an official said. He added the search was being hampered by bad weather.

                                                                                          The ship is owned the Egyptian company El-Salaam Maritime Transport Co. and was carrying 1,300 passengers, the official added. Some of the passengers are believed to be pilgrims returning from the annual hajj to Mecca, which ended last month.
