Inflating the link popularity of a new domain...

Ok, so a new domain is registered and you go about generating your incoming links in whatever method you adopt.

Google takes a look at you and sees that the growth of your site in terms of inbound links goes beyond what is considered natural growth and you're flagged. This is represented in the placement you're given on your targeted terms.

I know that many people take part in the practice of generating links. This thread is not a discussion about google's algorythm or the weighting of elements determining ranking.

I would like to know if anybody else has 'apperently' been flagged for this practice and what they have done since to counteract this on the back of an over zealous link campaign.

Yes, I have seen it. I reacted to this by growing slowly, no more than 100 links per day and generally don't exceed 20-25K backlinks in total (referring to total backlinks, not unique backlinks per domain).

Helpful guideline Have you managed to counteract this with any domain or are we to assume that this basically taints that domain with google forever?

I'm not sure if you're familiar with the Co-Op but it's the best link-building network i've used so far (if you're doing mainstream). you can gradually set an amount of weight to your sites and slowly build backlinks at the pace you wish. i've tried other networks like this, but the co-op is the best i've used

I have with older domains (non-sandboxed). I have still managed to get quite a few banned but with the numbers I mentioned before, I seem to be able to fly under the radar for the most part. Anything over 40K backlinks and that seems to be a redflag for Google, so keep it under that.

check link vault it's easier and safer

keep it natural.. depending on content and niche not more then 5 to 10 or 100 links maximum a day.. also depending from what sites those links are comming!

a good tool, where you can set up "max links a day" is Link Vault

It's obvious that there must be a way to break out of the "filter".

I would offer that one thing that will certainly do it is a heavily trusted backlink.

Think viral content. Probably take in 100k links in a couple weeks, but they often rank within 30 days. New domains. They've avoided aging delay, sandbox, et al. How?

A few (one?) heavily trusted backlink(s). A CNN, a peer-reviewed .edu.

Thanks for the replies. Have you got any firm way to check if a domain exists in the sandbox or would you say this is diagnosed from the symptoms the domain is showing?

Not easily because the existance of such a sandbox isn't really proven, its just speculation. My way of determining it is comparing results with Yahoo and MSN. Alternatively, if you're ranking well for your site name but nowhere in the top 1000 for a moderately competitive keyword (one you know you should score in the top 1000) then its likely sandboxxed.

didnt know this.. i just kept building some backliks occasionally, now its a lil more up in google.. but still it was a minimal change so its sitll way more down then before...

Thanks again for the info, it's helpful. Imo and despite the speculation, I think its fairly safe to say that the sandbox does exist. Researching now - I'll let you know how I get on with a possible anti-sandbox technique.
