I have talked to several people about this one myself and I think the going consensus is a Toshiba or a Sony VAO laptop.

Sony being top and Toshiba being next in line.

I now use a Sony VAIO Desktop and came to htis one from a Gateway and the differences are amazing. This Sony absolutely blows the doors off that Gateway. They are expensive as hell but when I get the cash to finally get my Laptop, I am getting a Sony VAIO... LOL

Just my input, probably means less than nuttin.

Dell, Gateway, = boat anchors or truck wheel chocks for parking on hills.

Toshiba has quite a few in that price range or did.

I have a Sony and I hate it. Would love to dump it now!!! Can't load standard Windows, have had to rebuild the hard drive, I don't know how many times, etc. Toshiba is the way to go.

chocks...those triangular shaped pieces of old tires bolted together that semi's carry chained close to their rear wheels so they can 'chock' their tires on hills....IE: wheel stops. lmao

When I was the admin for my last company, I bought a bunch of Dell and a few Gateway laptops (yeah, I was coerced into buying the Gateway's). Dell Inspiron 7000's and 7500's are freaking heavy, but they have nice big screens, are fast enough, and I never had to send one back.

The 4 Gateway's came configured incorrectly, one was DOA, a second locked up all the time and went back, and a third got a broken keyboard... nothing but trouble.

I dropped my Dell Inspiron from my laptop bag onto pavement (maybe 2-3 feet), not a scratch. Never had to send any of the others in for repair either.

yes dell is a bit heavier but much better...their new technology is great....battery lasts much longer before recharging it than sony or any other laptop.....i would say dell is great choice or even IBM thinkpad

We've got a new toshiba and a new dell.

both rock. the dell has a better sound system, monitor, video card. The toshiba is a good personal computing tool... I watch dvd's on it...and it's alright...but you definately feel like you are using a laptop. the Toshiba priced out after tax at 1500 something a couple months ago. The Dell was around 1800...

Sony's are awesome as are Thinkpads but they are probably a little more than you are looking to spend.
