A simple question I'd like to ask some of you

Today it's a fact that MOST of the palestinian people voted in their democratic elections for an extremist islamic terrorist organisation which openely calls for the destruction of Israel and is responsible for the killings of hundreds of innocent civilians.

Did this affect your views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? if so, how?

assuming that those people who voted have a working brain and actually voted according to their beliefs...

they want what the believe is their land back, very badly and don't seem to care what means it takes. i think they lost faith in any democratic ways ages ago and who could blame them but they by voting these guys they basically said they want the bloodshed on both sides to continue. sad really. just another example of how religion causes problems. i can't believe people are so willing to die for that shit.
you don't know you're wearing a leash if you sit by the peg all day..

One could paraphrase this question and ask if this example isn't sufficient proof that bringing democracy to Iraq won't necessarly mean more peace in that region.
        I don't use ICQ anymore.

          yep...that's a legitimate question...

but one could also say that the palestinians may be different from some other muslims...

I mean, there must be a reason why they never were wanted in any muslim country...

like Jordan which kicked them out, or Egypt which does everything in their power to just keep them away...

          just a thought...

Didn't the Hamas just campaign under reformation and not extremist terrorist issues? Maybe the Palestinians were so fed up with the former government they put faith (perhaps in the wrong place) that the Hamas party would actually be chill in their new governing role. Now, I'm sure a bunch of them are freaking out and saying "Oh shit, what did I do?". It's unfortunate so many people hold so tight to religious beliefs.

If the middle east didn't have OIL, it'd be a forgotten sandbox to the rest of the world and this would be a sidebar on page 27 of any newspaper.

I think the Palistinians voted for a change. The existing government lost it's "god" when Arafat died and there was nothing to vote for in Fatah. They voted for the only alternative which does provide them the social services never provided by the existing government. I doubt all those who voted for Hamas endorse all of Hamas policies. This is going to be a trying time BUT if a peace can be negotiated with Hamas it will actually work, they have and have had the real power for some time.

you are wrong for 2 reasons:

                  1. the agenda that hamas promoted for this elections is as I described in my first post.
                  2. there is absolutely no oil in Israel or the palestinian authority...

-- Apologies. I was just relaying what I've heard on NPR from reporters there.

                    2. there is absolutely no oil in Israel or the palestinian authority...

-- Another apology. They only rank 88 on the CIA oil rankings page, which is pretty low. However, they do have a nice coast on the Mediterranean and are allies to the US. Maybe that's why I have to hear about this crap all the time.

Not at all... I have always believed in the ideologies of the Palestinians. They have been clamoring for freedom since time immemorial. They must be liberated from the shackles of tyranny, oppression and injustice.

                          Simple Answer:
Palestinians are primitive and that leads them to do stupid things like support terror or elect for terror groups to their leadership

                          Long Answer:

No. My view is that there will never be peace in that region until one of the "sides" is wiped out, the muslim regions are paid off (like in Ireland although I don't see that ever happening) or they're integrated into one of the 2 cultures and since that won't happen, we're left with one side or the other being wiped out. I'm cheery this morning.

Interesting. Most people do not draw the analogy of N. Ireland and UK, but it is extremely similar. Ironically it was the brits in both places.

Alexg, there are the same ethnic issues within muslim groups as I'm sure there are within Judasim. In addition, it's kind of like saying the states should except all mexican christians.

I seriously doubt you want to discuss anything, you just want to state your position and find supportrs.

hummm? 'stupid people have stupid problems' no Arab society has ever been able to achieve any level of success in any area, in the last 1000 years . . . what would make you think that it will suddenly happen in the next few months? and beside it's a well documented fact that any county achieving independence immediately attacks it's bordering neighbors . . so as you can see it's lose/lose situation dealing with Arabs and Muslims in general, and the Palestinians in particular . . that answer yer question?

The middle east will always be a cesspool of religion until the end of time. Nothing that goes on over there surprises me these days. Its like they're all in a big competition to see who can fuck things up the most. Its as though they're bent on ensuring some of the prophecies of the bible eventually pan out.

What they need is some sort of project to distract and occupy their minds in a good way. I think many of them have far too much spare times on their hands to dwell on things and allow anger and hostility to fester.

                                            yep...that's a legitimate question...

but one could also say that the palestinians may be different from some other muslims...

I mean, there must be a reason why they never were wanted in any muslim country...

like Jordan which kicked them out, or Egypt which does everything in their power to just keep them away...

                                            just a thought...

The question is not simple at all... Give me time to think this over.
