no offence but thats kinda stupid
you really have to teach your kids the value of money
when you earn your money, you appreciate it
if you receive everything you want, you get spoiled (in 99% of cases)
the first car can be as well a used car, no need for a new one, neither a luxury one
well but if you're really a multi-millionaire and so are your friends and everyone in your neighborhood, then perhaps different rules apply
I don't use ICQ anymore.Comment

lmao, but the RS4 is like double the price of the BMW. The RS4 can only JUST beat the M3 in a drag race, but the M3 is faster round the track. (They done a test on top gear, each of the presenters had a grudge on which car was better). I'd rather buy the M3 and save a chunk of change, I still love the RS4 though .The RS4 is better than a M3 hands down.....oh it has 100Bhp more than the
beamer. It's a safer car, it has better handling, it's more comfortable and it
looks classier.....The engine of the RS4 is probably 1 of the best engines ever
made......8000Rpm from a V8, 4 wheel drive....I could go on and on......
The bad stuff written above about audi's A4 are all things you could
encounter in the "entry" A4 models the entry beamer models have their
problems too......none of that will you ever experience in the RS4 though..

For me it's piece of mind, my daughter will need to drive back form her moms house to mine (2 hour drive), at 16 she will be going to High school 4 hours a day then to college split shift.no offence but thats kinda stupid

I want her in a car with all the right safety features, navigation, panic buttons and so on.
For a 350.00 lease a month that is worth it to keep her safe.Comment

damn thats hard to believe a rwd car out handled the awd. I would like to see that Top Gear show.lmao, but the RS4 is like double the price of the BMW. Sounds like your daughter and the car are a perfect match! She's in college, and is doing an internship now with the district attorneys office. A few more years and she will hopefully pass the BAR exam. So she has worked very hard and continues too. I made a deal with her that as long as she does well in school and does NOT get arrested,I would help her financially.
Her first car I bought her when she turned 16 was a new Eclipse. I do agree, that 16 year olds don't deserve luxury cars.Comment

That may be, but the post you quoted isn't really all that stupid. For one thing, most cars made since the late 90's have most of the latest safety features required for any car to be considered "safe" these days. For another, I don't know if it's teaching "the value of money" so much as just plain work ethic and the feeling that the kid accomplished something for themselves. At 16 to 18 yrs of age a car is probably the single largest purchase a kid that age would ever make, for most people anyway.
When I was that age I was no different, I too wanted a car. My old man said "You want a car? Great, go get a job and earn one"
Which I did.
I was even able to take out a small loan ($1200 I believe) from my bank, which I paid off in 1 year. The car: a steel-blue '74 Chevelle Malibu. That was in 1980 that I bought it, and although it was my first car I can tell you it meant a great deal to me. A great deal.
I don't begrudge my dad one iota that he didn't just go out and buy me a car. I realize others have different circumstances in their family and lives etc, but it' s been my experience that every time I hear about a parent buying their kid a new car it always ends badly for all concerned. The kid invariably just doesn't value it like they would if they had had to work for it and aquire it themselves, and they end up smashing the gift up.
I'm sure there are exceptions out there, and exceptional kids. I just haven't known of any, that's all.Promote Wildmatch, ImLive, Sexier.com, and more!!

it doesn't exist that show......there is the show where Jeremy Clarkson
raves about the 2007 RS4 and where he says several times...this is MUCH
better than any M3......b.t.w. the Audi isn't double the price of an M3
An Audi RS4 in the UK costs 50K pounds sterling......I don't believe you
buy a 2007 M3 in the UK for 25K pounds sterling

I'd go for the BMW btw. Everytime. But if she wants an Audi, take her to the dealership and let her test drive it, then take her to the BMW dealership and let her test drive that too. She's in college, and is doing an internship now with the district attorneys office. A few more years and she will hopefully pass the BAR exam. So she has worked very hard and continues too. btw, totally cool what you did for her man! Much respect.
If I ever have kids, I'll be making a deal like that with them, such as the one you did with your daughter. Sounds like she's making you proud, she sure deserves a nice car. Sounds like you got a good one there!Comment

I second that. She's going to think that everything will come easy to her if you keep buying her stuff like this.LisaComment

I'm not getting her a Bentley. I am getting a decent quality, safe, reliable car.
She clearly knows the meaning of work. She is putting 18hours a week in the DA's office and is a full time student.
I prefer to look at it as incentive. Everynight you turn on the news and you see kids getting into all sorts of trouble. My daughter knows the rules,if she continues on the right path, she will be rewarded. If she doesn't she will just be another schmuck with a bunch of sorry excuses.
One semester when she was in highschool she fell of highhonors and the eclipse was parked for a full quarter.
I've never had to park her car since. You might not be as anonymous as you think you are.Comment

Yeah man, I think you had probably seen my Beemer when I was still driving it. What model/body style was the one that you had? If I remember correctly you also drove a Jeep for awhile.
BEEMERS totally rock!! They are one of my all time favorite cars. My little 325 fits me like a glove it's definitely a drivers car. In the cockpit all the instruments and gauges are in the perfect position for the driver, and with it being lowered with Bilstien racing suspension it really hooks up nice on the road. I can literally drive sideways down the road and then ease off on the accelerator a bit and bam it will pretty much straighten itself out. They handle pretty good with stock suspension but it's like night and day when compared with the bilstien's.
I sold a bone stock beemer to a buddy a few years back and he did a few mods. when he got it. Exhaust, ram air with K&N filter charger and a few others pretty much on par to what I have on my current beemer, but without the suspension upgrade. I had the opportunity to drive the car a few months back and although being quite a fun ride I could really notice the difference the suspension makes and not just in cornering. Acceleration with the stock suspension isn't as snappy due to body roll and it doesn't hook up nearly as nice in the corners.Comment

My later comments in this thread were pointed more towards all the parents out there who just go out and buy their kids cars as presents simply because they can afford them. From what I've seen of it that only serves to further spoil them, rotten in many cases.
I don't see Minte and his daughter falling into that category, he seems to have found a way to ensure she has a good work ethic, which is the main issue here at least as far as I'm concerned.Promote Wildmatch, ImLive, Sexier.com, and more!!

You obviously didn't read any of the thread.
She is a law student, she is interning 3 days a week in the district attorneys office helping to put criminals in jail. When she finishes school and passes the bar that is what she will be doing for her career.
BTW, I looked at the A8 when she test drove the A4, it's a battleship.
I have college age kids and I'm not old enough to drive that.
I'll stick with my Lamborghini,Porsche's and Benz for a few more years. You might not be as anonymous as you think you are.Comment

There are lot's of people with statements about how they "don't want to tell you how to raise your daughter, BUT..."
My dad sold me my first car, and it was a piece of shit. I had to dump paycheck after paycheck into keeping it running, and i lost one job from it breaking down.
That being said, I was having the same debate between bwm and audi, but after a terrible time at the ONLY bmw dealership around, i've made up my mind to go with audi. Look into the service centers in your area particularly and see what their reps are like. All cars need service at some point, but if you start hearing stories about how a dealership took 6 days to replace a battery, you know you've got trouble.Comment
-
We're lucky here in Madison, one dealership sells all of them. Porsche,Audi,BMW and Mercedes. And I am a good longterm customer there.
We ended up buying an A4 quatro today. She really liked it,and I couldn't find any reason not to go with it.
I knew the minute I posted this thread that there would be a percentage of GFY'ers that would know more about what is right for my family than I do.
I would've been surprised if it had been any other way.

there's a couple of them actually around here, but they're dealership promo cars I believe. You watch, they'll release it in june and make us wait
I might have to stop by the dealership on the way home from work this week and see what it would cost to get out of the 3, and into the twin turbo 1 ;)Comment
