Why do people hate drugs? : Opium

Firstly, I personally think opium and opium products should be all completely legal and sold over the counter at drug stores. Now, it might seem radical, but that is my view on it. What I want to know is other people's views. I am just curious as to why people think opium should be outlawed or under prescription or visa versa. I have some broad questions below.

1: Should opiate laws remain as they are right now? Yes/No

2: Three reasons on why opiates should be legal, and three reasons why opiates shouldn't be legal.

3: Have you ever tried an opiate?

If anyone is interested in talking about the topic we could expand on the three questions, but I think the three questions are good for right now.

I prefer to look at it this way:

I think there is a reason why it is illigal, you get addicted to the shit and it starts after some time of use to make some severe damage on your vital organs...
This is very expensive for a society... first of all, and addict is unable to carry out a decent job.
he is costing a lot of money to have on a hospital along with the fact that might be stealing and curruption the society in others ways to get money for opium which will, even if legel, not be cheap.

I don't give a shit if people wanna fuck themselves up but the rest of us is going to pay for it in the long run.

The only thing that causes major harm to your vital organs is the TYLENOL in the clinical opiates. Just look at keith richards, he's been shooting up for 5 decades. Sure you get strung out, but if the drugs are cheap & legal...the only strain on society would be the idiots popping up in the E.R. from overdoses.

I wouldn't say make them over the counter, but i would say...make them cheap & available to addicts....it will keep them from stealing and killing. This goes for all drugs, with the exception of speed/crank/meth....which would actually cause more assault type crimes legalized.

                The bad.

                1. It's an easily dependant drug. People can become easily addicted. The withdrawals from it are terrible (nearly the same as heroin). It can take a user 6 months or more to be fully free after quitting from regular use. Very dependant users not in the best health can easily die from withdrawal.

                2. It is a tolerance drug. Users easily and quickly build up tolerance for it. Needing need more and more to have the same effects.

                3. It is very easy to overdose and die. The drug depresses the respiratory system to dangerous levels. The high is very similar to heroin, and on a real dose a person is completely separate from the world and useless in any conventional manner. Frequent use is extremely damaging to the heart.

                The good:

                1. Wow, one more pain killer on the market. Like we don't have enough already.

You sound like a 17 year old who has smoked weed a few times laced with opium, or just done a few tar hits. Knowing nothing about the actual drug, or it's history.

No one "hates on drugs". Drugs are more apart of everyone's daily lives as gasoline and electricity. Opiates are a very strong and dangerous class of drugs. Which have been used and trialed and error already through out history in almost every civilization there was. Go check out some history books and you'll understand why they are illegal on the streets, and used sparingly in medical practice.

                  More information.

Opium is what is derived from the poppy plant. Poppy is a plant that grows pods, from the pods you extract latex opium. The opium is completely natural and produces a high when dried and smoked.

Opium contains morphine, codeine, and thebaine. Morphine and codeine act as CNS depressants, and thebaine acts as a stimulant. Those three chemicals can be extracted from the opium after it is harvested.

The high from opium really depends on what part of the drug you take: pure opium, morphine, codeine, thebaine, or heroin.

A pure opium high is the same as a morphine/codeine high, it relaxes the user to a state of euphoria. This is a relaxed state, but it doesn't feel like alcohol. Alcohol makes you feel disoriented and drowsy while opium keeps you in a natural state. It is basically like being buzzed on alcohol, but you don't lose any coordination at all or any intelligence. You basically feel good without any negative side effects. (unless you OD, then you get sick)

A thebaine high is a little different and a lot better than a morphine/pure opium high. You can experience thebaine high from Oxycontin. This high makes you relaxed, optimistic, and euphoric. It isn't comparable to alcohol in any way at this point and you remain in a completely natural state. (Unless you OD, then you get sick)

Heroin is in its own league and is the strongest opiate. It gives the most euphoric high of all the opiates but generally acts the same way as the rest of them. It is derived from morphine.

If you take a lot of any opiate you WILL get VERY relaxed, but you can break this relaxation at any time and then be completely functional again. If you OD you get sick, potentially very sick, but if you aren't stupid this generally shouldn't happen.

PS: I'm not a drug addict.

Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (inspired by a dream while he was on opium)

                      In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
                      A stately pleasure-dome decree :
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
                      Through caverns measureless to man
                      Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round :
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
                      Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree ;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
                      Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

But oh ! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover !
A savage place ! as holy and enchanted
As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover !
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced :
                      Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail :
And 'mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
It flung up momently the sacred river.
Five miles meandering with a mazy motion
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean :
And 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
                      Ancestral voices prophesying war !
The shadow of the dome of pleasure
                      Floated midway on the waves ;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device,
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice !
                      A damsel with a dulcimer
                      In a vision once I saw :
                      It was an Abyssinian maid,
And on her dulcimer she played,
                      Singing of Mount Abora.
                      Could I revive within me
                      Her symphony and song,
To such a deep delight 'twould win me,
That with music loud and long,
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome ! those caves of ice !
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware ! Beware !
His flashing eyes, his floating hair !
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

Are you talking about opium in pure unprocessed form or processed (heroin, morphine) form?

Opiates are extremely addictive much more than any other drug and as big of a liberal as I am im not sure legalizing it would be a clever move.

Good replies and good points made by people. I agree Ramos that pot should be legal, but I also think opium/heroin should also be legal.

Now, I will ask another question.

Do you personally need the current laws in place to keep you from doing opiates? For example, if heroin was available at stores, would you be addicted?
