There must be some serious shifting going on. Several of my sites jumped in the SERPS so high, I'm literally getting pounded with traffic.

Try Matt Cutts' blog - he is Googles head of quality and usually posts when they are doing a major change to the algo - they do currently update every day so not surprising that people see changes.
