    Any GPS users around here?

    I need to buy a GPS device for a project. It would only have to display the latitude/longitude where ever I am (It's for precisely recording the exact location of buildings etc).

    There are about a billion different GPS devices out there. What would be the cheapest thing to go for?

      I'm not 100% sure if its got the lat/long, but i'm assuming it would do. Most newer phones have GPS built into em and you could get lat/long off them with a proper program.

      Will take some google research im afraid mate.

          I use my Pocket PC for GPS. Use a program put out by the guys at Space Machine that works really well. However, I use mine for traveling. If you have a Pocket PC, maybe check into something like that. That way you can use your Pocket PC for many other things than just a GPS unit.

              if you have an ipaq, then you can get software like "destinator" 2nd hand on ebay for under 50$ with the receiver. Or you can try downloading a copy on isohunt and that would leave you with just having to pay for the receiver, (bout 20$) and the ipaq.

              i use destinator..its cool and cheap. Right now assuming you dont have an ipaq and are looking for a really cheap setup, then you could pick one up used on ebay for probably 75$ (doesnt have to be very fast, just something good enough that wil support the software)..then get a used copy of destinator on ebay with the receiver.,.and you will be good to go for under 160$ shipped.

                  If you're not familiar with the limitations of GPS receivers, they need a pretty clear path to the satellites, so if you're inside, or surrounded by tall buildings, or under a canopy of thick trees, you won't know your current position.

                                              true, garmin is the leader, and i have a bunch of different models, and all work perfectly, also the garmins interface nicely with digicams having gps links, which will store the lon/lat in the exif info; this is good for travel, aerial photography, etc.

                                              now, you can instantly locate any point on earth very accurately using the internet:

                                              just download google earth, find your target on the satellite map, and note the lon/lat. (requires a computer with some horsepower for best results.)

                                                  very true, all the garmin products get great reviews.

                                                  I bought an Ipaq HX4705 with a bluetooth garmin gps receiver.

                                                  I tried CoPilot Live first and that software sucked in my area of South Florida.

                                                  I returned CoPilot and got iGuidance since they use the NavTech maps that MapQuest uses.
