Letterman had to alter his show to fit the earlier time slot's demographic which included odler viewers.
Put Leno against Letterman back in Letterman's prime and he would stomp all over Leno's ass.
When they first went heads up against each other during the earlier time slots...even then Letterman was in the lead.

Haven't seen Leno for a while since nobody in the UK is interested in showing it anymore, but Letterman is always the favourite for me.
Leno's opening monologues were long and not very funny, and while Letterman has his share of misfiring gags, the monologue overall is shorter, sharper and funnier.

Leno is the better stand-up comedian (I think even Letterman will acknowledge that) but Letterman has a more wacky sense of humor: For example, I don't think Leno would ever come up with the idea of dropping things off the roof of the building where the show is done. Letterman always look bored to death and always have some stupid unfunny bits like "will it float" , "know your cuts of meats", etc... Leno's monologue is superior than Letterman's in my opinion... and nothing on TV beat the "point what's your point" bit Leno have.... Battle of the Jaywalking all-stars is pretty hilarious too.. As far as the interviews goes.. slight edge to Letterman when he's interested...Comment
