Agreed 100%...

All they would need to do is transform the major tables to InnoDB if not already and setup a slave server whose dedicated purpose is the search function (or multiple slaves if they really need them) and problem (should be) solved!

As slow and often as this system seems to just 'go away', do you have any idea how long it'd take to rebuild an InnoDB setup?

Plus, then they'd have to migrate away from 3.23.

3.23 - ahh the good old days

True that ALTER TABLE would be a bitch...but there are other ways it can be achieved. For example, take a backup and import it on a different server, run the ALTER and whenever it's done, switch that to be your new MASTER and run a script to copy the missing rows over (update auto_increment values if you have to, to avoid duplicate row issues).

Some threads/posts might be gone very temporarily but your downtime would be way less. I'm sure there are plenty of other alternatives as well, but I don't feel like thinking it's Friday and time to go down a few

just use google and use advanced options to only get results from gfy.com. It's way faster than the search ever was.

You can search a specific site using google by putting in the term you want and then specifying the domain like this:

Search Term site:gofuckyourself.com

The true answer is that much of the history of the board (say pre-2006) needs to be moved off to an archive style database and not be part of the main DB. By keeping so much stuff in the main DB, every query is a little longer, a little harder, and so on.
