i think it's time to take it even a step further... not to link from menus, sidebars, footers, linkpages... but from within the content. This could be pretty easy if we are talking about blogs (just mention a post on another blog, mention the blog, or whatever) but with sites that might be a bit difficult.
Google knows that everybody does a-b-c nowadays. It's only a matter of time until these kind of links get punished or lose their value.
