I got figure with the lawyer who was representing him , who always came off to me as very money hungry. Probably threw frighteningly large numbers at Chris at what this would cost and the large chunk he would want up front. So I can see taking the deal. The big talk I would fight to the end works if your very rich or your lawyer is a crusader who is in it mainly for the fight not the money because he wants to make history and social change.There aren't many of that type lol

I think that this was a major mistake. However what is the information that we DO NOT KNOW, that his attorney advised him to take the plea.

My last lawyer I fired because he wouldn't find an end. The following week I went to see their lawyer, we drew up the contract, and it was over.

I said it during my first year on this board that they will start bringing RICO charges against people. The responses were always the same..*buried heads* or "RICO investigations take years."

Another thing I have been mentioning for years now, is that a lot of people here don't recall what it was like during the Reagan era.

For one most were still in elementary school or diapers, but when the Meese report came out about porn the Reagan administration made some moves which had a trickle down effect across the country.

City governments started to go after adult related businesses using zoning ordinances, it killed most of the adult business in Dallas, there are still a few standing but not nearly as much as there were before this.

There to this day is still no "porn" being sold in Fort Worth, someone opened up one store in Kennedale which is just on the outskirts, but no where directly in the city.

I still remember to this day, going into the adult shop in downtown Fort Worth I had rented a video the previous week, and came back for another. When I arrived home it was censored.

I went back to the video store and the owner sat there and denied ever having any uncensored videos in his store ever. It was like the twilight zone. And the look on his face was of fear, I didn't realise what happened until later and he must have thought I was working Vice under cover or something.

Government has not necessarily unlimited resources, but they can put the hurt on a business by shutting you down for days, or keep you constantly in court paying your attorney and it can get quite expensive.

They won't get you on obscenity necessarily, or you may win, but at what cost?
Your business gets shut down in the process either way if you are not able to adequately cover the cost of the defense.

So while I would have loved to see this guy fight the battle for us, I can understand why he would have given up.

He could have stuck it out for the next couple of years going in and out of jail, and be broke in the end, or get out now and take the money and try to develop a real life for himself instead of being a martyr for us.

You mention about martyrs. After reading that, I couldn't help thinking why anyone would even consider wanting to be a martyr for the industry these days (unless you're genuinely driven by free speech principles yourself).

I would far sooner back down on these charges and then try and do an end-run around the legal system farther down the road once I'd regrouped and thought all the issues through fully (and consulted with a knowledgeable and experienced attorney).

To give Chris's ordeal a war analogy - he may have lost a small battle, but the war is far from over. I don't blame him one bit for accepting the plea agreement at this point in the game. Major kudos to him for sticking it out as long as he did...and at least attempting to stand his ground, if only for a relatively short while.

The main thing I'm still somewhat puzzled and curious about though - is how they could have made it a condition of his agreement that he wasn't to associate himself with adult-based content or activities while 'on probation'. I mean, how can they enforce something like that - a totally legal endeavour. I don't know how much of the adult stuff comprised Chris's livelihood, but it seems as though the gov't and legal system is intent on kneecapping his abilities to earn income for himself that way.

The asshole cops told me they would get me, that they were going to ruin me ... They layed 255 charges total.

When I won in appeal, they wanted to forget the first 2 charges they lost, and proceed one by one on the others.

My lawyer, Milton Hartman ( now deceased ) was neighboor of Herbert Max, minister of Justice in Quebec. My lawyer told Herbert Max that if they proceeded with the other charges, I would flood the country of the first 2 titles I won on... and bring the case I won to the Supreme Court under a " bref de certiori " ...
