Argh or Lol

I just spent the last four hours at a friend's house. He has a new Compaq computer with 10 MB hard drive, 500 Mhz processor & other sweet stuff. Unfortunately, he loaded every damn game & program he has (all the early Sim games, several combat & flight sims). He couldn't understand why it was so slow. The first thing I did was check resources...it was down to 53%. Well, I did some fooling around (especially the start up menu) & got the resources up to 80% whick makes it run a hell of lot faster. This is the third time I told him not to load so much stuff on it (3/4 of the games/programs he don't use anyway).

I don't know if I should scream or laugh...

Games are forbidden on our computer. So many of them are DOS based or mess with the system registry. The only ones the kid can have are those little 16 bit emulated games, oh and the emulator. We reserve the real games for the playstation and the nintendo 64 units.

Cool part is so many of the little games are in japanese and i love watching her figure out how to play them which she always does. brag brag brag.

Some would probably disagree, but, your memory has more to do with speed than your hard drive. Tell him not to have so many programs running at the same time. And, if at all possible, tell him to get DSL. With online games, it doesn't matter what you have if your connection sucks.

I took alot of stuff off the system tray too. It's bad when you look at the bottom bar & see 20 icons. Of course, he had to have the ViriusGuard running (couldn't talk him into getting that off the tray). You should have seen his start up menu...

He has a Playstation while I have a Nintendo 64. I'll stick to N64 since his kids (7 & 5) just love throwing those Playstation discs.

We had a friend - customer that did that too. We upgraded his system every year and had it back for 'repairs' within a week. Sheesh he stuffed every prog he could lay his hands on, even things for 286's and wonder why the system died.

And he was the 'collector-trader' of programs in college so you can imagine the stuff he had-has. We finally started ignoring his calls. Sheesh, they expect you to make it all better for free even when they *know* not to do that. Idiots. lol

That, my friends, is why I run Windows 2000 on my SCSI HD and have ME installed on my 20 gig HD. This way no games fuck with my shit, and when I want to play then I boot into ME. Simple solution... also ... when family members come over and want to use my computer, I set it up to autoboot into ME and have the 2K drive hidden. No porn for them! (unless they have a credit card)

10MB of Hard Drive? Wow! That machine is a fucking beast compared to my p166 with 2GB. I wish I could play games. The only games I'd touch would be UT and uh...okay that's it. Just UT.

Yeah, the system resources are a big part. I'm assuming that you went in and typed in msconfig in the run section to disable a bunch of crap that he doesn't need ?? If not, go through there, Hell, I have 91% of my system resources available, but I do have 256 megs in my system though.

One other thing that would help him out would be a nice video card. I don't know what he has in there, but if he wants to run games and has an AGP slot in there, tell him to go out and pick up a Geforce card and pop it in there, games will smoke with a card like that. It's nice because the Geforce cards have an onboard processor to handle the graphics, so even if the processor isn't the hottest, the card will do the graphics work.

The ram still has a big effect on there though. How much ram does your buddy have in the system ?? Nowadays, it's best to have at least 128 megs in a system.

You can say that again... I run with 512 megs and my system resources never drop below 75%, even when I don't disable most of the crap on the system tray.

Oops, yes, I meant 10 GB. See how confused I get spending a few hours at his place. He has 64 RAM & good video card. I played a little bit of a flight simulator & that seemed the only good thing about it.

I always figure if you don't play a game in 3-6 months, get it off your system. It's funny because he wants the computer for gaming & his wife wants it for accounting & family history.

Doh, I forgot all about msconfig. I'll send him an email to check it out. I don't want to have to go back there anytime soon.

i get phone calls late at night from mates wanting to know what to do...AOL is doing this...Napster is shutting down...How do i get past the googlie monster in this part of half-life...i downloaded an exe-thingy and my pc stopped...
No matter what i tell them, or how i set up their system - they always fuck it up. They should stick to fuckin playstations!!!!

It's amazing how many people don't understand. A guy I know buys a new laptop and sells me his old one. I reconfigure it and a couple days later he's complaining that his old laptop is now faster than his new one and wants to trade. So I tell him his is slow because of all the crap he had loaded in his system tray, and that if he removed it things would be better. But... end of story, I have an even faster laptop now.

It got to the point we quit building customs and selling anything. People just won't listen and waking the old man up from a dead sleep to go fix some screwup is not the best idea. He about throttled that friend of ours. Ex friend I should say. 5 yrs of that was the breaking point. lol

well since we are on the subject of computers, Gateway Customer Service told me to NOT save my MP3's to my C: drive...where the hell should I save them too??

They said it takes up to much space on the comp...

Babagirls, do you have zip drive or CD-R? Those would be good to store MP3s? My 100 MB zip drive have helped me alot with big files that I didn't want to save on my harddrive or wanted back ups of.

I have always got at least 10gb of mp3s on my hard drive. Each song is usually anywhere from 3-6 megs. And I have some 256 bit 15 minute songs that are like 24 megs. So they do take up room, but in answer to your question "where else do you put them?", well...nowhere. You can buy another external drive or upgrade yours. But as far as using a cd-rw, that's only if your downloading the mp3s to cds. If you do like I do and put your cd collection at home on your computer to listen to them while you work, than it doesn't work like that.

thanks for the help...I dont have a CD Burner just yet..been reading ads for Office Max, BestBuy and etc to see whats on sale. I dont have money to spare right now. Kinda waitin on my taxes to come in the mail. I WAS going to buy a burner BEFORE i reformated the computer, BUT i lost all 228 songs anyways So, now I can reformat and wait on the burner...i was confused when Gateway told me to store my Mp3's somewhere else and NOT on my C: drive..I was like "WTF?" lol Thanks for the advice girl
