I tend to think that Anime is a dime a dozen, but there are standouts if you look.
Steamboy was amazing to look at.
Akira is the king of Anime. Still holds up well after 20 years
vampire hunter D is great. Watch it when stoned and the talking hand sidekick will make you piss yourself laughing. make sure you see the english dubbed version in this case.
Both Ghost in the shell movies -- the second one has a good mindfuck in the last half hour that will throw you for a loop.
there's a series called "furi-kuri(or Fooly Kooly) -- just plain nuts and creative.
Ninja Scrolls -- if you like lots of blood.
Kite -- mixes porn with some really extreme violence
