And the reason most people who contribute anything to which the word "great" might apply "age badly" is because they raise the importance of making that contribution above personal indulgence and the strict preservation of the organism. Which is not to say that great artists don't struggle with their own demons or that they don't skate (unwisely?) too near the precipice or too far down on the slipperiest part of the slope. They surely do. Where else would you think to find that which does not yet exist but on the other side of some sort of line?
Go have a case of beer, or a jog, or beat your wife, or eat a cake, or post on GFY all day. It's so stupid to pretend that addiction is anything but a universal human fact, and so, so sad that Bobby wastes his energies attacking Larry's addictions and Larry wastes his attacking Debbie's when all that does is send them all right back to the bottle, the needle, the bakery -- where they are as unlikely to find any joy as they were the last time they were there.
People suck, or so the numbers dictate. A few of them pretend it's not the case, and inspire all the rest. Frankly, I don't care how they do it in their own homes, hurting no one (perhaps not even themselves) when the result is breauty and magic.
Of all the ways in which it is possible to reach old age, I think the worst is surely with regret for the things not done. His face might look like an old catcher's mit, but I would rather scrape an inch of dried rocker vomit from a thousand concert stages if it meant I could read a single page from Keith's diary than have to ride shotgun for half an hour with an angry, unfulfilled, tee-totaling nobody who contributed only his judgement to the world.
Age badly = Age unhappy, having made nothing nor made anyone else happy.
