    Newbie has 2 silly questions

    Hi everyone,

I'm a very new newbie and I have 2 questions that may seem silly to you seasoned webmasters. What is a popunder? and What is a 404? Can anyone point me the way to samples? Thanks

A pop-under is a form of forced advertisement that opens in an external window UNDER the current window. IE: you load a site, an ad pops under. In theory, when they'll close the site first, which then makes the ad visible.

404 traffic is traffic generated from files that do not exist. IE: you make a gallery: http://www.domain.com/gallery/01.html, well a surfer might want to see if http://www.domain.com/gallery/02.html exists and may edit the url in the browser to see said page - if it doesn't exist, a 404 error is generated. You can capitalize off of this type of traffic by defining 404 documents in your .htaccess file and redirecting accordingly.

If you need to know more about .htacess and anything else, Google is your friend.

There are no stupid questions only dumb answers.

BTW, I never spent 2 seconds thinking about 404s, 301s or 302s and it's ok.

As for pop unders and overs, I vote no on those. Think of your surfer and what they want.

They want to be able to close their browser window easily if the boss comes by.

Never feel dumb about asking questions, everyone was new at one time and we all need to learn and hell, I learn something everyday.
