I am anxious to see some of the replys to this thread. I honestly don't see much of a difference either way. My personal preference is the new reality style tours with a small video clip etc. however I have found some of the most basic ugly tours convert better.
For example some of the single page old school sites like FlashCa$h have convert real good. When I first started with them I used to think their was no way in hell they would produce sales.

I think niches which are slightly taboo, such as Tranny, Bi, bsdm etc. do well with a more amateur design , where as mainsteam niches likes teen, lesbian do better with a large and clear reality design.
For example I created a BYOT site for Pimp Roll : www.shavedshemales.com which I admit doesnt convert aswell as I thought it would.
But I also promote other Pimp Roll Tranny sites such as http://www.trannycenterfolds.com/index.html which seem to generally do a lot better than shaved shemales.
So it's a hard one, I just finished an amateur teen sites www.teenxworld.com/main.html with is a mixture of both so it will be interesting to see how it goes, (once i get some affiliates *cough*)

I think the text on a tour is way more important than the design of the tour.. Can't really answer with any authority though to be honest. Seen great results from both style designs, and not so great as well, in no particular order.
Some are doing combo style, where the top large header is "old style", followed by a series of "reality style" sections.43-922-863 Shut up and play your guitar.
