Land and space is at a prime and people build these expensive homes without consideration for potential disaster like building retention walls, etc. The worst part of the rain is the gridlock bumper to bumper on the freeways though. I think he means Drains, they are easy to install in new construction with PVC pipes. Cheapest and best thing you can put in before pouring new concrete. I have them all over my house.
But in this case, looks like the hill side, he would need to raise the wall up and put a drain and re-route it to the neighbors house..lol, I would hate to see the mud all over the yard after the rain stops. Drains would help but from the rain we had today, not much.
I still don't know why people buy homes in Malibu, Ca. after all the mudslides, fires and floods and only one highway. Must be the Zip Code.Comment

Some do not have an understanding of the geology of southern CA. How retaining walls are pretty much jokes and drainage holes will not do a damn thing.
People just build on very fucking unsafe ground. Once a certain layer gets lubed up the whole thing fucking goes. That one that had today is tiny. I expect a shit load more this year when the real rain hits. Then you get to see multi million dollar homes ripped and blown appart by mud.Comment

when i drove around SoCal for the 1st time i was blown away at all the communities on and around 400' hills of dirt. -- the costal hills. 1st, i was amazed that there are hills of dirt without solid rock support.. never seen anything like that before. then, people live on them! holy moly. some homes had blue tarps hanging over the "new edge" of their yard down a "new cliff" to prevent further erosion. wow.

Tis not the houses, Tis the dirt ontop of the bedrock that they are building them on.
Personally I feel they there should be zero state aid or payments when these houses slide down the hill. You know your building on a hazard zone and I think you should be soley responsible. Same with a few other natural disaster hazards in certain areas of the country.Comment

personally, i am tired of people that decide to live in on the ocean in homes that get flooded or totally hammered during storms, live in flood zones, on fault lines, in tornado alley or areas that get totally pummeled by hurricanes every other year and act totally shocked and surprised when their shit gets destroyed.
its one thing when its just a total, random act of god... its another thing entirely when you know "next time it really rains hard, i am totally fucked", do nothing and act like the problem is the fact that it rained.
my regret in these situations is that more people aren't killed. the gene pool could do without these assholes. people in lousianna blame the federal government for not proactively fixing the levies in new orleans. well... uhm... hmm... excuse me, but i would think that if you constantly live with the eminent threat of the death of you and your family, you might consider doing a little something about it yourselves and make sure action is taken one way or another.
just an idea.
everyone hates the government until its time to place blame, demand billions in aid and rebuild their trailer parks in the middle of buttfuck kansas whose only claim to fame is the most trailer parks destroyed by tornados in the world.Comment
