Quite a bit actually - instituting a draft would accomplish two things.
First it would replenish the military and boost the economy (remember that all those guard and reservists have legal rights saving their jobs at home) - something sorely needed if we believe what the president is proposing in a long term view of operations in the middle east - you can only rotate and extend so much
Second it would drive the dissapproval of the war from its current 60 % or so up to around 85 %, causing the "swing" republicans that really want to have a chance to win next season to finally go beyond the breaking point and stop their holding out - while I understand this will happen anyway after the primaries, this would certainly speed things up and save soldiers llives in the long run
A third side benefit is that it would give us enough people at home to respond to natural disasters and cope with anything else that might happen as well as allow the pentagon to shed the private contracts it has supplementing the military with those extra 105,000 highly paid private soldiers - saving the taxpayer a huge amount on their defense bill
