I can tell you that my 2.66 Core 2 Duo pc can encode high definition video approx. twice as fast as my older 3.0 Ghz Pentium D dual core pc. A newer Quad Core would probably be about twice as fast as the Core2Duo.Comment

propably , but to use all 4 cores you have to use VISTA or LINUX i think.

Pentium D (dual core) is nothing but 2 Prescott Processors side by side… runs very hot, uses a ton of power.

Everyone should be buying core2duo's. They do outperform the dual core processor quite a bit as long as you don't buy the lowest version. To give you an example, a quad core 2.4 is about 2x as fast as a dual core 3.0. Honestly, the sweet spot in price performance is a quad core now.
http://www.tomshardware.com in the processor section has a tool that lets you view performance differences between all of the consumer amd and intel processors that is a pretty good guage to use

ive upgraded all of my dual core's to the core2duo's - i have 30+ dual core's sitting in a box ill sell cheap if you want some =]
im using about 30% less power and encoding about 40% faster since the upgrades
for what its worth the 1.8 core2 overclocks so nice that they perform as well as the 2.4 core2's. all of them are running between 2.8 and 3.0 ghz.Comment

So we've learned that Core 2 Duo is signifigantly better then the Dual Core.... I'm interested to know as well if what was said about the quad core needing vista or linux is true.Comment
