maxmind database was decent when I used it.

we use maxmind, in fact i just topped up my account a few mins ago for more lookups

We have tested them on with the basic country app and all was great, use it on our join forms. We will be upgrading to city package shortly for other projects.

how often does this database need to be updated?

also when u say u use it on the join forms, do u mean when they signup based on location and its automatically linked?

curious coz i would love to use something like this.

are you looking for a API that you can program to use or like a complete package to use with a easy web front end?

check out http://georedirect.com for the latter. Just depends on what you need.
