Apparently, you are a fan of big budget/big special effects films!
I have to agree on Sin City, even for sheer visual appeal. Definetly ground-breaking.
But beyond that, I can barely think of 5 decent movies I saw this year. Overall, a pretty lousy year unless you like gorillas, bats and wizards.
I'll be seeing Munich I hope this week, so that may get '06 off to a good start
cinderella man was really good i jst saw it for the first time the other day and i actually like batman even tho thats not really my thing good choices tho

No not even close. Some of my favorite movies of all time are Ikiru, Shawshank Redemption, Citizen Kane, amongst many other either lower budget films or 'minimalist special effects' films. Notables I haven't seen yet this year are "The Constant Gardener," "Capote," and "Munich."
Honarable mention goes to "King Kong", "Hustle and Flow" , "Sin City", "Capote" and "The Woodsman"
Best Documentary was Murder Ball.
I couldn't agree more with you about "Murderball." I was damn glad I bought that DVD on faith that it would be good. It was really good. Interesting. I suggest to GFY'ers to rent this flick. You will be engrossed and pleasantly surprised at how entertaining it is.

Those are on my list too, along with "Goodnight and Good Luck".
2005 was the year of the remake (and mostly bad ones at that) and bad-tv-shows-to-movies - there was so little to get me motivated.
That is one I really want to see. It hasn't come out yet in the UK but I think it is due to soon.
sarah, did you finally see constant gardener? what did you think of it?
good night and good luck is slow...more of a docudrama than a drama, but wonderful acting...
people should seriously consider giving their multiplexes a rest and hitting the arthouse theatres if they think that movies suck nowadays...yes...movies suck...there are plenty of great films though

I acquired a copy of the Contant Gardner last night and I am planning on watching it tonight.
The problem is that even though international release dates for big blockbusters are becoming more or less the same we still have to wait a while between the American and UK release dates for the more quality films. I try to see all the Oscar films before they come out and that is always a real challenge as some don't get released here until afterwards. Heck, sometimes they are on DVD in the States before they are in the cinemas in the UK.
I am an arthouse and world cinema type of gal. I watched four movies on dvd last night..three were Japanese and one was French.
I really want to see Murderball...next to impossible to see here for some reason.
I saw Downfall a couple nights ago..amazing film.
I've heard the same thing about "Downfall," but I think that was released in 2004 as it was up for best foreign film at last year's Oscars. I think I'll take your word for it and order it on DVD as everyone who has seen it says its amazing, too, and the actor who played Hitler apparently nailed the part.
It was a bit of a mixed bag. My flat mate insisted I had to watch an old Kurosawa film Yojimbo because I dared mention I hadn't seen it before. I knew of it because I had heard that Fist Full Of Dollars was a direct rip off of it to the point that Kurosawa sued the studio that produced the Clint Eastwood version.
Then he made me watch Tetsuo which is possibly the most messed up film I have seen in a long time. Not for the average cinema goer at all but worth seeing if you like to be grossed out and confused. It is only an hour long which was about as much as I could deal with of it.
Then I brought out one of my faveorite Japanese films - Ai no corrida (In The Realm Of the Senses). It was banned most places in the West when it came out in 1976 because it is explicit both sexually and violently towards the end. It is a story based on the real life 1936 sex scandal that was a big deal in Japan. It is a fine study of sexual obsession. However, please only watch the uncut subtitled version. We made the mistake of buying the dubbed version of the DVD and it takes away too much of the sensuality that sucks you in.
The French film I saw was Drôle de Félix which is sort of a road movie between north and southern France taken by a gay, hiv positive of French-Arab decent. It wasn't bad but not fantastic either. Typical French story telling devices of breaking it up into a series of chapters almost where he meets different people in each one.

Yeah, that happens with world cinema where it is released in its home country in one year and to the rest of the world in another. It was actual on British tv a couple weeks ago and I got the chance to see it.
The actor that played Hitler did really well but isn't in as much of the film as you would think. The woman that played the wife of Joseph Goebbels got me the most. Not the least reason because of a scene that involves the death of her kids..one of the most haunting scenes I have seen in any film ever.

I watched that one over 10 years ago, Sarah. If I recall it really goes all the way, and shows a castration, and lots of choking until losing consciousness during sex. I remember thinking, "Fuck this is a brutal movie!" It took no prisoners, but really delved into the depths of, like you said, sexual obsession.

Yeah it is one of those where you don't want to give away the ending but you feel the need to let any men watching it with you know that it might not be an easy ride.
Cinderella Man is a gem. And just like Shawshank, a movie about hope as its central theme, and also like Shawshank, rather neglected at the box office, although thankfully it did end up turning a profit, earning $109 Million worldwide, yet costing $88 Million in production costs. I knew it would find its way to people thru the DVD though, just like Shawshank. Shawshank hardly made any $ but now almost everyone I know has a copy as its one of the most beloved movies of all time. So yes, if you haven't seen CM yet, rent it or buy it. You'll be pleased.
