WTF Makes a Pornstar, a Pornstar?

I keep hearing about how this person's and pornstar, that person's a pornstar, but I see them and I just go, ok...why?

What I'm asking is, how is a girl "officially" labled a Pornstar? Appearing in a DVD? Covergirl of a DVD? Appearing on a website doing porn? Appearing in a pornographic mag? Or all the above?

If I was in charge of it... "pornstar" would be reserved for people so known
for it that they are as close to household name as practical.
Like Ron Jeremy, Jenna Jameson, old school legends like Ginger Lynn, and
maybe some that Howard Stern has on so often that they become well-known.

BUT, in reality "pornstar", at least for the women is a label they slap on

i personally think if you are listed on more than 5-10 REAL box covers from major studios, then you are a porn star

if you have some dvd's some crappy no named company released, then you are a video girl or something like that

but the key word in porn star is STAR....there are a lot of porn girls, but very few are stars

I consider an adult performer a 'porn star' when they've gotten a good amount of mainstream media attention. I consider Mary Carey to be a 'porn star' even though she's barely done 50 adult films and most of those were girl/girl, because of the vast number of times I've seen her in the mainstream media. I've also noticed at fan events that she's got a huge line of people waiting to meet her, just like the Queen of Porn, Jenna Jameson.
