My thought is that they attacked because they are resisting the spread of the western world. They don't like that McDonalds or KFC or any number of corporate businesses are moving in and they would rather live like they're still in biblical times. The fact that we aren't Muslim is a big deal too, but I think the overall reason is that they don't want to advance with the rest of the world. They would rather live in mud huts and trade spices or whatever.
