Why do bad things happen to good people. Like kids etc.
the only reason I like the idea of a Heaven is so I can tell my daughter that I will always be looking over her and I do that to comfort her. because the reality of no after life is sad.

TheJimmy, you're into Buddhism? Hit me up sometime so we can chat a bit about dharma. I'm heavily interested in Eastern philosophies.

Awesome! I'll beep you tommorow Gene, as I'm about to signoff for the night, I got you on ICQ
To be honest, I'm also a comparative religious studies fan...the concept of dharma is interwoven into a few religions and sometimes I wonder if it's not also available for study in the physical sciences on some level.
I look forward to the day when physical/hard sciences merge or at least become accepting of the psycho/spiritual realms and VICE versa...there is way too much 'one directional' study and arguments in the world today imo...
"team picking for the sake of team picking"
--humanity seems plagued with it at times to the point of insanity...

Me too and agreed
I don't believe in God and Heaven in the traditional Religious sense but do think the idea of everything within and without the Universe including us, as made up of a connected energy which is infinite and beyond time and space, makes pretty good sense.
...And God said, "Let there be light; and there was light."
"Good!" said God "Now I can see what I'm doing!"
IMO not believing in an afterlife makes me want to live this life to it's fullest.
For me not believing in an afterlife makes this one pretty pointless. Kind of like busting your ass in college for four or more years but then not using your degree/s.
.. ok bad analogy as half the population has done that but anyhow I think this life is all about gaining experiences that we need in order to take the next step, whatever that may be.
I don't believe in A GOD... I believe there is a higher power, a life force if you will.. but GOD as we know him is a made up thing to give people hope in my opinion...
I think when you die, your energy is soaked up into the earth and you become apart of everything within earth that is taking energy.. a flower.. a bug.. a blade of grass.. who knows..
I've studied a few religions in my time.. Nothing truly makes sense.. I take a piece from each and make up my own mind..
You know for me if there is a G-d in heaven, great, if there is not, great...
the point of living a good life NOW is what people should focus on, if it takes believing in a father figure that's gonna spank your ass to make you be a decent fucking human being here on earth, RIGHT NOW......then GREAT....
if thinking that there is NOTHING else after now, so you better fucking do it right now.....GREAT!
Having the belief that you should be the BEST person you can be RIGHT NOW and not be a total piece of shit, no matter what the motivation, is the road best traveled...
pick whatever motivation to be a good person works best for you and congrats....you win the prize of attempting to pull off a good life now, and the people around you thank you for it, and if it turns out that helps in some 'after life' double bonus....

I believe in God and heaven but organized religion isn't my game. IME, when you have a child die, believing in heaven or even an afterlife is one of the few things that gets you though the day.
I also think if there's a hell, most so called Christians are headed there.
My god is my consious (not sure if that is spelled right)..We all the know the difference between right or wrong--its just if we choose the correct path....
Heaven and Hell--don't believe in it...
I believe when we die its like when you get surgery and your put under. You don't dream your just out....
Heaven and GOD are just an avenue for ppl who can't think scientific about things. One just has to wonder why there's no modern day miracles happening. You'd have a *lot* more believers if some stoner walked across Lake Michigan or something.
why do people believe in god and heaven?
Because they were raised that way mostly. Not a factual reason, just because the parents pushed it onto their kid since birth. Not really healthy in my opinion but to each their own..
I'm sure the whole Heaven 'thing' was created back when life was hard and life was short. That way people could take comfort knowing that they would see thier loved ones again soon and that life wasn't just a meaningless short experience that it so often is for so many.

I believe in God or a higher being and "life" after death, in no certain terms. Why? Because look around you... humans, nature, the universe etc. is too precise and beautiful to be a mere coincidence.

God hurts kids to teach them a lesson.
God kills kids because they were going to grow up to be evil. He has killed many kids that were going to grow up to become another Hitler, or another Elvis Impersonator, or whatever. God has a plan man.
God will pour his wrath upon you like water for asking such a question.
I don't believe in any of that. It's all a bunch of over hyped bullshit and I bet there are alot of disappointed dead people. Can you be disappointed when you're dead? *ponder*

Simplistic? If nature is so simple, why is it so difficult for man to contain and emulate? In our infinite advancements and techonologies, we will never ever come close to being as powerful as nature is. Even planet Earth is but a mere speck of blue in the grand scheme of things.

True. Most people I know don't have any idea about their own religion, nevermind religions that exist "outside".

totally understandable the olny reason I might even think about it is for my daughter. its something we have created to comfort us and to keep most people motivated.
I live my life to the fullest and I get sad every year I get older I dont want to just die. I just need enough to live a great life and pass some down my blood line that is my after life my blood running though my daughters vains
