im in bangkok and tried to get a few shots last night too, but failed a tripod would have been handy, and most of the lightning was hidden by cloud :P
Yeah, you definitely need a tripod, and patience. I took over 100 pictures and this was the only bolt that I caught in front of the clouds.....
