If you hold your mouse over the link to your profile you'll notice it is a number. Your ID is a number, not the nickname you have. As long as the nick you want is not used your number can be changed to whatever nick you want and the ID itself will keep post count and join date. You just have to have a good reason and a reasonable moderator who is willing to change it for you.
