Is there a legitimate use/purpose for torrent sites?

I can't think of one, same thing with programs like kazaa or limewire etc....I can't think of an honest legitimate reason for them to exist.

I was thinking of using them for a game site I was working on. For game demo's and so on, all legal stuff.
In November, you can vote for America's next president or its first dictator.

You can't be serious with this question.

Same thing as porn. Advertising dollars. A torrent site could ask the same thing to a TGP owner. No, the movies that people watch aren't linked to a posnor but everything surrounding them is.

There are plenty. We are working on a 4x4 movie site that use a torrent server to distribute the video CD's we compile and those other people upload to the site. It will cut at least half of our Bandwidth bill.

There are many game Demo sites that use it to distribute their new games, faster and cheaper.

            Torrents are not all bad

Viral Marketing, Emergency Broadcasting, Political Advertising and Productions that the content owners want to share with the public such as serial cartoons or pubic infomercials.

Don't be in a hurry to kill a technology just because some use it for illegal purposes.

It's the equivalent of saying all Forums should be shut down because a percentage of the forums share copyrighted content without

                    STFU noob.

I didn't ask what was the purpose of owning a torrent site...DUH money.

I meant is there a purpose for torrents and torrent trackers other than to hijack people's copyrighted work.
When the biggest torrent site out there is named "pirate bay" it leads one to believe that their main purpose is piracy.

And who said they should all be shut down? Did I say that?

                      NO.

I asked if there was a reason for them other than piracy, so far I haven't seen one.

After the replies in this post, you still don't see a legal reason for them to be there?
