Without knowing the job description I think it might be a test to see if you can do simple math in your head.

I haven't done "powers" since 1970 but was able to do that in my head with a little help from my fingers.

Is there a formula for those? I forget.

My point was that I'm used to being asked questions about high level systems architecture, not something that can be done with a calculator.
