Only one problem with that article. Once a group goes over 1,000 members you cannot mass message them any longer. I would assume facebook has done this to avoid this type of spam.

think they did that to stop their servers crashing under tremendous mail loads

That's when you whip out your facebook API tool. Facebook released their API info. Search for it

It's not just the groups... but also the apps.
If you can make something useful and "inter-friends" that people feel inclined to share... then you have app pages that display advertising and other link/information on them.

FBML is pretty simple... but like CSS, it takes some practice to really get it right. Especially when you start getting into the mock-ajax.

But it's well worth it.
