seriously though - when I was a travel agent I booked A LOT of package holidays to the Dominican Republic. At that point it was the new and trendy place for the lower middle classes from the UK to go on package holidays. A good number of them enjoyed it but a lot more had problems. Anybody that has been to Mexico knows the drill about looking after your health, etc.
Top tip: don't forget the other side of the island is Hati. Bringing your own girls is probably not a bad idea.Comment

The DR has lots of hookers (some are even good looking) but the vast majority are in the big cities, especially Santo Domingo. There are actually lots of legit whorehouses there. Ive been to Puerto Plata a couple times, havent seen any hookers.LOVERCASH.COM

I would never have thought Sleazy would be a two star hotel type of person. You are right, the DR is one place I have never been (and I would go if given the chance) but as a travel agent I did deal with hundreds of people that went and at the time it was the focus of many industry wide issues in this country because of people getting ill.
Now, anyone drinking any 'new' water are going to get sick a bit but their was a high level of bacteria in the water that various people tested, etc.
Like I said NO BIG DEAL if you are just a wise tourist. Unlike me who got deathly ill in Mexico once despite not knowingly drinking local water..some got in me somehow anyway.
If there have been massive improvements then good for them.
