its from todays NY timesOne of the more shocking photographs to emerge from the current Iraq war was taken last year in a rural farm town in the American Midwest. It?s a studio portrait by the New York photographer Nina Berman of a young Illinois couple on their wedding day.
The bride, Renee Kline, 21, is dressed in a traditional white gown and holds a bouquet of scarlet flowers. The groom, Ty Ziegel, 24, a former Marine sergeant, wears his dress uniform, decorated with combat medals, including a Purple Heart. Her expression is unsmiling, maybe grave. His, as he looks toward her, is hard to read: his dead-white face is all but featureless, with no nose and no chin, as blank as a pullover mask.
Two years earlier, while in Iraq as a Marine Corps reservist, Mr. Ziegel had been trapped in a burning truck after a suicide bomber?s attack. The heat melted the flesh from his face. At Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas he underwent 19 rounds of surgery. His shattered skull was replaced by a plastic dome, and a face was constructed more or less from scratch with salvaged tissue, holes left where his ears and nose had been.
Ms. Berman took this picture, which is in the solo show at Jen Bekman Gallery, on assignment for People magazine. It was meant to accompany an article that documented Mr. Ziegel?s recovery, culminating in his marriage to his childhood sweetheart. But the published portrait was a convivial shot of the whole wedding party. Maybe the image of the couple alone was judged to be too stark, the emotional interchange too ambiguous. Maybe they looked, separately and together, too alone.Comment

US Marine Ty Ziegel poses with Renee Kline before their wedding in Washington, Illinois, in July. Ziegel was severely wounded in a suicide bomb attack during his second tour of duty in Iraq. He was blinded in one eye, had a shattered skull, and most of his skin was burned off. The couple were engaged following Ziegel's first deployment in Iraq. After Ziegel was injured, Kline lived with him for over a year while he recovered at a hospital in Texas.

That picture is heartbreaking. I think you can feel that they still love each other and that he probably really wants and needs her, but she looks shocked and almost like there is someone off camera holding a shotgun.
If their marriage lasts it should be put on a pedestal of what true love is. Sadly, I doubt it will. He obviously has a lot of medical issues and most likely emotional issues and that is a lot to ask a 21 year old bride to deal with.
I do wish them luck.
Any leader of any country should be shown pictures like this on a daily basis as a reminder that the decisions they make effect real peoples lives in very dramatic ways.Comment

I have seen a lot of pictures and a lot of injuries and the stories of Soldiers that have all kinds of disabilities are heart wrenching, but this one is just unreal, it just goes to show that true love is selfless in so many ways.Comment

i'm not sure if i would want to live like that. in a wheelchair - well, while i was driving bikes i had to live with that risk. but i cannot imagine how much that must hurt everyday - physically and mentally
and i'm really happy i never joined the army and took that risk for some stupid medals - while defending some barrels of oilComment

I feel bad saying it, but I kinda wonder why the doctors didn't just load him up with a shitload of morphine and let him pass away instead of trying to keep him alive when he was that fucked up. Face burnt off, skull crushed, jeez. To quote a cheesy Stephen King horror movie, "sometimes dead is better".Comment
