I know that policemen call each other cops, but is it ok for a civilian to call a policeman a cop? Or is it like one black man calling another black man a nigga... but if whitey does it it's bad?

The original name for "Cops" came from "Coppers" and I believe it got it's start in England back when the police would wear the double button front jackets and the buttons were made of Copper so the slang for Police Officer became "Copper" and has since been shortened to just "Cop". I don't think it's really derogatory or anything. Just shortened slang.

I once had an officer named Copps coming to my house to file a report after I got broken into. I was thinking against it but my big mouth got the best of me and I cracked a joke about his name being fit for the job.
