Agreed. Cats can be pretty hands off, if need be.
Just be sure that you get at least 2 of them so that they can keep each other entertained... along with a couple toys and at leas tone of those kitty-tree things... and, at that point, all that's _necessary_ is changing the kitty little box daily, and dropping them some food once or twice a day.... maybe 2-4 minutes of chores total for those "I can't be bothered with a pet right now" moments.... laser pointers and those fishing-rod looking toys with a feather-dangle at the end are great toys to break out once in awhile.... catnip's fun for those evenings you're inebriated, and wanna share the experience with your pets...
of course, you can also make them pretty hands on... cat's are considerably more intelligent than most people give them credit for - they're just not very eager to please. You gotta show cats respect to earn their desire to please you.... and if you're successful enough at that, you can do things like train them to go to the bathroom in the toilet, do backflips, talk on command, etc.
