Putin is protecting his country. Thats it. As for him staying in power. He has already let it well known that he will not run for office again. So basically that means they already know who will take his place.

Russia needs a strong leader, and Putin is the strongest leader since NIkita Chruscov.

He plays the way he can kick any ass in his country and does not have to necessarily play the game with the western rules.

I respect him for standing up to the west. Contrary to popular belief, The USA & the UK, both have bad records when it comes to pushing thier weight around.

Don't mind him he suffers from short man syndrome. They really don't have the ability to back up any real threat. It's nothing more than show, more likely to boost morale with in Russia.

Russia has a long way to go before it will become a real world player again. Trying to bully the west around won't help much especially being he doesn't have much to back it up with.

It is a response to U.S Missile Plan / no one likes when weapons are being placed at their borders.

The United States insists the defense shield is to guard us - and our friends and allies - against the growing North Korean and Iranian threats. But Russia denounces these systems as "destabilizing."

Washingtonwants to put an X-band radar in the Czech Republic and 10 interceptor missile launchers in Poland; these would add to existing U.S. missile-defense sites in California and Alaska.

But Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov scoffed at the idea. His thinking: Neither North Korean nor Iranian missiles can reach Europe right now, so "against whom is this missile-defense system being made?"

ROME — Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that U.S. plans to build a missile defense system in Eastern Europe would force Moscow to target its weapons against Europe.

"If the American nuclear potential grows in European territory, we have to give ourselves new targets in Europe," Putin said, according to Corriere. "It is up to our military to define these targets, in addition to defining the choice between ballistic and cruise missiles."

Putin is not a bad guy here, he is just defending his country like any good leader would.

Russia has the biggest nuclear arsenal in the world, and a decaying infrastructure.

That is a huge global security problem.

heavy activity along our borders and we've had 10+ fighters up 24/7 the past days.. (normally just one scramble every other day or so) really something new since the cold war but I guess its good practice for our guys aswell
