    25% Hardcore porn tax passes

    .. In Italy. :-P

Rome, Italy (AHN) - All hardcore pornography distributed in Italy will come with a 25% tax, under new legislature introduced in parliament by Italian Finance Minister Giulio Tremonti. Previous attempts to raise new revenue by taxing pornography have failed.

The tax is the result of the minister's overruling objections from the porn industry that they are already paying VAT and it is illegal to tax them twice.

Under pressure to meet EU rules, Rome is desperate to find new revenue to trim its budget deficit.

The new tax is similar to one imposed in France and will apply to all hardcore pornography, including films, magazines and merchandise sold in sex shops.

Tremonti says that, just like his French colleague, he is imposing what he calls an "ethical" tax.

The porn industry in Italy is estimated to be worth more than one billion euros a year.

That sucks. But in the end it's the consumer that'll pay for it, not necessarily the companies.. prices go up.
            ..and I'm off.

No surprises, Italy has even taxes on SMS text messages. It sucks.

Both end up paying, consumers and companies. Both lose in a tax increase situation.

It would suck but you are very right. I also think in italy its only for adult shops not the net, they couldnt do the net. THey are going to go to lens and say you had 3 italian signups you owe us 25%?

Wow, thats a pretty sad deal. This does not include online? In that case, their might be more demand for online porn.

I dont think prices will rise much. Its a ww market and in the end they will earn totally less money than from the existing VAT....and further they will have to feed people that loose their jobs. Thats what happen when you have short-thinking politicians.
