If you still can't do it then continue to install the script because your host could be setup so it will work anyway.
If the script still doesn't work then you need to change hosting because you should be able to write to any file on your domain, otherwise no auto-update
scripts around will work for you.

I have dozens of domains sharing one ip on virtual hosting and although there are .com folders, I get error 550 CHMOD 777 does not work on those folders. Nor can I upload anything at all to the root of any of my ___.com folders , it fails every time. Is this a limitation of the way they have the virtual hosting setup?
