Sydney, Australia (AHN) - Police in Australia say a second night of violence on Sydney's streets continue Monday as rioters smash windows and damage cars throughout beach front suburbs.
The race riot began Sunday night after a mob of 5,000 white men attacked men they believed were of Middle Eastern descent in retaliation for the assault a week earlier of two white volunteer lifeguards. Rioters were chased on Sunday by police vehicles and a helicopter.
Youths of Lebanese descent are alleged to be behind the lifeguard attack but officials, including Prime Minister John Howard, do not believe there was a racial motive.
Police arrested 16 rioters and say 31 people are injured, including a man stabbed in the back by an assailant.
