If I in Australia as a total non hip hop fan knew about the Peas before fergie then you can rest assured that they were successful enough before she joined. "Joints and Jam" etc were pretty big in '98 and they were nominated for MTV awards etc way before she joined and did pretty well in the charts.. just because you'd never heard of them before they hit top 10 doesn't mean they weren't around. Singles off their second album sold more than REM, Limp Biscuit, Garbage's did that year etc.
Anyways not defending them.. but you're incorrect... hatefests are better when they're truthful

yeah that was lame, still it's not like anyone here wouldn't do it for an extra few mill, who gives a fuck. And there's nothing wrong with pop, one of the hardest things to do in music is to write a great pop hook and most popular music is really just pop with different textures - ie SOAD, im listening to mezmerize here cause of the thread and really if you break the songs down into their components and ignore the "texture" or musical prism of style and it's dual tracked harmonies and falsetto hooks with traditional chord progressions.. listen to Radio/Video 1:08 to 1:20 and tell me it's different from whats happening in the Beach Boys "help me rhonda" chorus. "Violent Pornography" has the same ascending progession of a hundred other songs with a simple arpeggio backing vocal at the end.
