Depending how niche your adult keywords are, I would agree mainstream and hockey are definitely less competitive to get ranked for.
Then again, the terms are less searched and get less traffic. For example, I may rank on page 1 for a term that only brings me 5 uniques a day, while you might rank on page 5 for an adult term that brings you 10 uniques a day
My tip is focus on getting ranked high for many less-competitive terms and the sum of them each getting you 5 hits here, 10 hits there should add up. I get no more than 10 uniques or so daily on any one keyword or term, but I rank for many different terms.
There is a WP plugin that lets you easily set a title ad keywords per posting, which I think helps to this objective (I barely use any plugins but its one of them).
